Indeed, young women especially need to be on the lookout for warning signs that they or their friends could be headed down the path of an abusive relationship. Here are five stars for whom that reality was all too close to home.
Christina Aguilera
In September, singer Christina Aguilera opened up during an E! documentary about the domestic abuse that she was subjected to from her father while she was a child. Her mother finally left him when she found blood dripping down Christina’s head after her father struck her for being too loud while he was trying to take a nap. Christina’s father has since tried to reconcile, but Christina stated that she feels no need to have him in her life.
Jaslene Gonzalez
Twenty-two year-old “Top Model” Jaslene Gonzalez became the spokesmodel for Liz Claiborne’s Love Is Not Abuse and came out this year about an abusive relationship she began at the age of seventeen and didn’t leave until she won America’s Next Top Model Cycle 8.
He’d get on his knees, apologize and cry, and that’s what would get me. He even considered going to therapy with me, though he never did it.
But I felt I could help him. I could show him I still loved him and he’d change. In reality, it was hard for him to change. It was a vicious cycle, and the abuse escalated every time.
Salma Hayek
In March of 2008, Oscar-nominated and well-married actress Salma Hayek told Glamour about an experience she had as a child when her family came upon a woman being beaten by a man in the street. Her father intervened, fought the man and won, but the woman began hitting her father. The experience made Salma aware of the unique psychology that keeps a woman in an abusive relationship.
Los Loney Boys’ Joey “JoJo” Garza
In 2006, Los Lonely Boys bassist Joey “Jo Jo” Garza was arrested after neighboring hotel guests and the hotel manager at the Omni Hotel in Austin called the cops because they heard him repeatedly yelling and slamming his fiancée, Frances Lyne, against a wall and hitting her, according to the police affidavit. He was charged with assault causing bodily injury and possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana and was released on bond from Travis County Jail hours later. Charges were dropped, however, as his publicist told the press, “It was all a misunderstanding.”
Univision Anchor Fernando Del Rincon And Wife Univision Anchor Carmen Dominicci
For the Spanish-language journalism world this story is something akin to Maury Povich being accused of beating Connie Chung. Fernando Del Rincon who hosts Univision news show Primer Impacto was fired in December of 2008 from the network after his wife, Carmen Dominicci, accused him of domestic abuse the night of a friend’s wedding in the Dominican Republic. She was fired first for badmouthing Del Rincon, a co-worker, which was in direct violation of her contract. Bish, hold my earrings! Rival network Telemundo interviewed Dominicci, who divorced Rincon a month before the story broke. There she described the night Rincon allegedly grabbed her by the neck and almost choked her.
She then said that he announced to her, “Are you happy? You’ve turned me into an Osvaldo Rios,” referring to her ex-husband, Puerto Rican telenovela star Osvaldo Rios who she also accused of domestic violence fifteen years earlier.
Telenovela, indeed.
