Shakira Can’t Say K’s And R’s And Other Stuff From The Rolling Stone Interview
3 November 2009, 4:50 PM. By Cindy Casares
Shakira’s on the cover of Rolling Stone this month, perhaps you’ve heard. Also, perhaps you’ve heard that Rolling Stone lost relevancy about 20 years ago. Which is why this interview reads like She Wolf ain’t doing so hot on the charts. (The single didn’t break the top ten, so they had to push the release date back from October to late November to scramble to find a better single. It’s all so…so…calculated.) But, we still get to learn some mildly interesting stuff about Shakira like this:
I have them create all of my ‘K’s and ‘R’s on the computer, because I cannot say them with my accent myself.
But…your…name? Oh, never mind. This is a mystical, recording retreat in the Bahamas. The things that come out of the artist’s mouth don’t have to make sense. As long as they perpetuate the myth of artist as enigma:
I’m an Aquarius, but I’ve turned into a Virgo over time.
Why, that’s Beyonce’s sign. You’re not, following trendmakers, are you Shakira?
It’s interesting to me that in my teens, I was a rock chick, listening to Nirvana, Aerosmith and Tom Petty, and there was no Latin influence in my music whatsoever. When I started singing in English, I went in search of my Latin and Middle Eastern roots.
That IS interesting, Shakira. And completely random, we’re sure. Nothing whatsoever to do with a marketing plan to exploit your heritage. That’s why you’re not running around the studio trying desperately to fix a flailing album in post.
“You know, these songs were recorded when I was in Paris - wine, cheese, vibing it. You can’t re-create that shit.” She takes out a nail file and rubs away, shaking her head. “Yesterday, when we had a conference call, I looked so terrible,” she says. She throws her bare foot up on the lip of the soundboard and wriggles it around. “That’s all I put on the webcam for him to see: just mv bare foot.”
Oh Kayy.

Soo, her accent, Spanish from the region of Colombia, doesn’t have those consonants? How does she pronounce “Colombia”? I havent’ read the interview, but I’d like to think that a good journalist can follow through on a perplexing statement like that for clarification.
in reality producers can make you and i like any song they want, just by playing it on the radio a million times then you start like in it. shakira’s first songs were ok but her songs in english suck.
I really liked Pies Descalzos, but her English career bummed me out. She completely sold out.
No shit. Before she was talented and original. Since 2001, she’s been some sad, lame imitation of dumbass American pop stars. WTF?
We love you, Cindy. You speak for all of us.
auuuuu
