Shakira’s Back To Dreads, Inspires Trip Down Memory Lane

shakira-11099-8-475x760Shakira, whose breasts are small and humble so as not to be confused with mountains, sported long dreads at a party celebrating her recent Rolling Stone cover. She was also sporting a massive smile, which makes us wonder if she actually read the article and realized how awfully stupid and self-absorbed the cover story’s writer made her out to be. (Seriously, did Shakira kill that writer’s cat or something?)

Anyway: The dreads are reminiscent of the signature look she wore before becoming blonde, thin and crossing over into the English-speaking American market. Many artists, like Madonna and Cher, change their image constantly, these transformations forming a great part of their appeal and often acting as a visual supplement to whatever themes or ideas they’re exploring in a particular album. With Shakira, the change from Colombian-Lebanese belly-dancing grungy hippie folk-rock singer to blonde, toned, tan, scantily-clad pop chanteuse had the added element of her specifically conforming to mainstream, white, U.S. standards of beauty, understood as an attempt to package herself successfully in the States to those beyond the Latino community. In truth, Shakira’s look has changed a couple of times. The question, then, is whether her “makeovers” are just like those of any other female pop artist, or of there are more deliberate and possibly xenophobic elements at play. Is she experimenting? Entertaining? Selling out? Growing up? Check out our gallery below and judge for yourself.

I absolutely loved her Pies Descalzos album. The rest of her work has all gone downhill since then!

I keep getting pinche pop ups on your site (even though my pop up blocker is on) so I can’t click “next”.

Anyway, I saw her in concert about 2 years ago. She had on long skirt and coin scarf around her waist, with crop top and bare feet. She did mostly Latin music but then Wycleff showed up and they did Hips Don’t Lie. Was good up until then.

I’ll always appreciate the RED/BLACK MTV Unplugged look. It was the realest she’s ever been.

I wish the media would publicize her foundation a little more though *sigh*.
