Could Steroids Be The Cause Of Sammy Sosa’s Lighter Skin?

alg_sosa-then-nowAs you know, retired baseball player Sammy Sosa was recently photographed with decidedly lighter-looking skin, causing many in the media to wonder whether his pale appearance was the result of illness or a deliberate attempt to alter his complexion. Some possible explanations for Sosa’s new look that have been batted about include vitiligo,  a disorder that causes depigmentation and, more cynically, the use of steroids.

Steroids, long-known to cause such side effects as baby testes and bitch tits, can also result in skin lightening. According to a 2003 symposium on skin-lightening creams organized by the L’Oreal Institute for Ethnic Hair and Skin Research, aka The Committee to Prove We’re Not Totally Racist, topical steroids with skin-lightening capabilities. The symposium discussed how these steroids were shipped, illegally, to South Africa and the Caribbean from India and Europe. Some dermatologists added that such steroids had also made their way to the United States, particularly in small pharmacies scattered throughout immigrant-heavy areas in New York.

It should be noted that, despite the potentially juicy insinuation that Sosa suffered a schadenfreudetastic side effect after having taken performance-enhancing drugs, it is unlikely that these are the same type of steroids. But if Sosa’s new look is the result of deliberate steroid use, he would act as yet another statistic joining the growing number of non-Caucasians who use these controversial creams as a means of lightening their complexions.

Is he wearing colored contacts? The skin lightening is definitely not an accident.

Less than six months ago he looked normal so I seriously doubt that this was caused by steroids. It’s not vitiligo, which is something that doesn’t develop all of a sudden but starts out in patches and he’d be ridiculously sensitive to light (think: MJ under his umbrella whenever outside). Him going from black to sheet white in less than six months is straight-up bleaching, especially when you consider he’s using hair relaxer and colored contacts. That all screams: I hate being black! And let’s not lie: the Dominican Republic is horribly racist so no wonder he has developed some self-hatred.

What gets me is that Sosa is a sports figure, he has lived in America for several years now, and Obama is the fucking president of the United States and he still feels being black is inferior. That is beyond fucked up.
