At long last Argentinians Alex Freyre and José Maria di Bello have wed in a private ceremony in Tierra del Fuego that local journalists are calling the first gay marriage in Latin America. The private civil ceremony was held at the Registry Office in Usuhaia, the capital city of Tierra Del Fuego, with the approval of fuegina Governor Fabiana Ríos. We're still not really sure whether this is a federally sanctioned marriage or not since the couple essentially had to get married on the sly to keep a number of religious zealots from appealing the legality of the ceremony like they did in Buenos Aires earlier this month. The Argentine Congress has been debating the constitutionality of denying marriage rights to homosexuals, but no one has made a definitive declaration one way or the other. Presumably, this union will stand as a legal precedent if it goes unchallenged.
