file_2008815850411 Nine days after Chilean Olympic weightlifter Elizabeth Poblete gave birth to a baby while training in Brazil, not even realizing that she was six-months pregnant, the infant has died. The boy, named Eric Jose, weighed 2.5 pounds and died late last night at São Luiz hospital in Sao Paulo where Poblete was taken after giving birth at Esporte Clube Pinheiros. The premature infant was being kept alive on a respirator in the ICU. Without giving specifics about the cause of death, a hospital spokesperson said that the baby was also being fed intravenously and given antibiotics. Poblete had been trying to bulk up to enter a new weight category for competition and had no idea she was pregnant when she went into labor at her gym. Brazilian press reports that The Chilean Federation of Weightlifting forbade any member of the delegation in Brazil to talk about the case.

So sorry for her and the baby. This often happens with women on birth control or athletes that are used to not having periods for months, so they don't notice when they are pregnant unless they have symptoms and/or get a physical.

How on earth can you now know you are pregnant -especially when you're a weightlifter (so sort of in tune to your body shape?) I know this chick wasn't petite but COMMON! So listen up ladies -so that this doesn't happen to you :-) check out http://www.tictacdo.com/ttd/Find-Out-if-You%27re-Pregnant

If she didn't even know she was preggo I can't imagine this baby's going to grow up with a very attentive mother...

As a fellow athlete with sporadic periods, I can completely understand how this happened. I don't take steroids, btw. It's just that when you train 6 or more hours a day and are thinking more about your lift, your technique and your performance-it's not very relevant when your last period was...stop judging unless you too are an Olympian. Which you probably aren't.
