Early exit polls say Evo Morales has garnered well over 60% of the popular vote in his bid for re-election as the first indigenous president of Bolivia. Conservative former governor Manfred Reyes Villa was his closest rival with just 23-24 per cent of the vote. Morales, a former coca farmer, ran on a platform of Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) and announced that he plans to stay in office longer than his term limit à la Chavez.

Much of the president's support came from Bolivia's indigenous majority, which makes up 60 per cent of the population and which is now embracing greater powers and pride after long being suppressed by the 40 per cent minority of European descent.

This has rich people–and Americans–nervous as they claim Latin America is moving ever further away from democracy. Morales announced victory last night in a speech he gave from the balcony of the presidential palace.

This victory represents hope for the future of the poor and the disenfranchised of LatinAmerica….. We should all be happy because maybe, and just maybe, there will be justice for all!!!!

Good to see the people of Bolivia rejecting the quasi-fascist, neo-liberal candidate. But let’s see what Morales can actually get done during his second term. Sorry, but I’m always dubious regarding politicians, regardless of ideology.
