Maybelline made a bold and unorthodox move recently, signing a Brazilian model to represent their brand. Wait, no. That's actually what everyone does. Our bad. Anyway, it's Lisalla Montenegro! Isn't she purty? The announcement was made by Global Brand President of Maybelline New York, Cyril Chapuy. "Lisalla exudes a natural, fresh yet slightly feline beauty -- making her the perfect addition to our amazing roster of spokesmodels," he said, totally organically. As if a team of copywriters didn't spend a week writing that shit. So, if Lisalla's a spokesmodel, does that mean she'll be talking? We'll find out when her catlike visage starts gracing Maybelline advertisements in June.

Maybelline already has Brazilian Adriana Lima, Colombian Danna Garcia, and half Nicaraguan Christie Turlington. This isn't that big of a deal. The thing is that Lisalla looks acceptably "Hispanic"(TM) by American generalizing standards. She's got the Caramel Skin and the brown hair/brown combo that places her firmly in the Caribbean Latina demographic. Even though, you know, she's not actually Caribbean. Does she even speak Spanish? And God forbid any of the big mass market makeup brands ever hire someone that looks or is "Mexican". Other brands like Cover Girl and L'Oreal have caffe latte-colored Latinas in their roster, and Lisalla used to work for L'Oreal's HIP line when they first debuted in stores. Hispanics buy lots of makeup. Talk to me when there's a national chola spokesmodel. Now we're talking.
ReplyShe's Brazilian, so she wouldn't have grown up speaking Spanish, probably. Unless she's just really cosmopolitan like that.
ReplyTurlington's mother is from El Salvador, which is close to Nicaragua, but, you know, not Nicaragua.
ReplyMaybe she was just born with it.
