This is why Arizona SB 1070 will backfire: Immigration authorities in Berwyn, Illinois arrested Puerto Rican Eduardo Caraballo in a stolen car case, but when his mother posted his bail, he was detained because authorities didn't believe he was a legal citizen. His mother brought his birth certificate, but Eduardo was unable to answer some questions about the island because he's lived all his life on the mainland. Eduardo was detained for more three days and threatened with deportation--to Mexico. Thanks to tipster Ricky Martin for the heads up on this one.

ummm... how about DON'T STEAL CARS!!!
ReplyOkay... I'll concede that stealing cars is wrong if you'll just admit that deporting a man to the WRONG COUNTRY based on his appearance is at least a little effed up.
Replyhow bout this!, stealing and being deported is wrong.
Replythis case is not about the stolen car; is about how he was racially profiled because being hispanic
ReplyThis is not about stolen cars .. its about rights as an american. This is just crazy ... with so many hispanics here legaly are we all in danger of being held without justification .. LETS IMPEACH Arizona as an American State .. Hope Eduardo Caraballo sues but time for profiling. The are going to be more stories like this .. Arizona will need to hire a slew of lawyers for all the indiv /Class action suits will emerge for detaining legal Americans.
ReplyAm I the only one that finds this kinda funny that someone from Moocher Rico, I mean Puerto Rico, almost got threatened w/ deportation.
ReplySo the car wasn't stolen?
ReplyIrrelevant. (Pssst...Your white hood is showing.)
ReplyI thought We had problems in Australia being the new melting pot of the world. Those Arizona wimpy cowboys beat us hands down. vest@dailygaggle.com
ReplyIt isn't about a stolen car. But just because he was stopped in regard to a stolen car doesn't mean he was guilty. Now, not only are we going to be detained because of how we look but judged guilty without a trial? Besides, maybe he wasn't the actual suspect but only resembled the suspect. There are so many variables! And even if he was involved with a stolen car incident, he still deserves to be treated as innocent until proven guilty. What if it happened to you? Come on!
ReplyMy white hood? Well i guess if they allow tan/brown membership i might have one... Reading how this is posted. You can ASSUME he was pulled over in IL (not AZ) for being Latino, and all cops are racists. OR, you can ASSUME that he was arrested for stealing a car (innocent until proven guilty). The point to checking his identity and could not prove it for 3 days, I think that is scary... Ultimately, he was not deported.
Replycant get deported is puertorican damn ignorants
ReplyOf course he was almost deported to Mexico. His mom looks like Paquita la del Barrio!
ReplyLets face it the right way!!! Latinos are profiled by authorities (the same way african american are) to blame them for any unsolved crime and are arrested or detained by just TIPS from the true criminals to save their asses. States were political and goverment corruption destroy the economy and well being of the people, start blamiming latinos for unemployment, crime rates, and bankrupcy of the state funds. What about that?????
ReplyIn case you did not understood me, floks. Prejudiced people (Racists) wants to get rid of latinos (hispanics) one way or another. So, the local police are used to stop any latino for any reason, even a mere suspicious of an unrelated crime like a stolen car investigation, to be able to put them out of their state, and deport them.
ReplyYou don't impeach states you idiot. You break the law, you get treated like a criminal. I'm sure this article conveniently leaves out that the guy didn't have a license to verify his identity, so in that case what good would a birth certificate do?
ReplyI know it is a little late, but I do not often get to say the last word; Noticed several things which should give us some perspective: 1. The FEDS detained him according to percieved violations of FEDERAL REGULATIONS. 2. The event happened in ILLINOIS. 3. ILLINOIS IS OBAMA'S STATE. 4. The guy was not arrested without cause (he was a car thief suspect). 5. This has nothing to do with Arizona Law! 6. Just because the FEDS made a mistake (as unfortunate as it is) does not mean that we should repeal the FEDERAL LAW! 7. Read the Arizona law; it is modeled after the FEDERAL LAW, and make Discrimination Illegal. 8. If he is a car thief, he's probably better staying in Mexico as far as I'm concerned!
ReplyHE ISN'T FROM MEXICO!
Replythis article is biased from the start. you start off by saying that this is an example of why sb1070 wont work. Illinois does not have a law like this yet in place. SB1070 has ways to ensure this doesn't happen. Maybe you should read the law before writing garbage that is only meant to incie anger in a specific group of people. How about instead of giving us your opinion based on a lack of evidence, you write an article based on fact. SB1070 is not in place yet here, nor is a similar law in place where this occured.
ReplyOur government has not dealt effectively and honestly with our immigration issues. There should be a guest worker program so they can come over and pick lettuce legally. Yes, Americans will wash dishes and mow lawns. We did it for centuries before the illegal Mexicans came over and made it a really grunt job. The illegal immigration problem will unfortunately affect many legal citizens. It is not helpful to legal Mexican Americans to try to say that illegals being here is OK. It is not going to help your cause. The guy apparently did not have the correct documentation that he was here legally. If you were a crime suspect, you would have to present proper ID. Skin color is irrelevant.
ReplyNobody said he is from Mexico; just that we might be better off (just to lose the car thief) if we did send him to Mexico for a nice vacation! Just kidding; we really want to provide justice, but its a tempting thought!!!
ReplyHE WASN'T FROM MEXICO, HE WAS BORN AND IS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN
ReplyYou said, and I quote, "heOs probably better staying in Mexico". Emphasis on staying. So yeah, you did say he was from Mexico.
ReplyA. he wasn't Mexican, he was born an American citizen, B. he had a birth certificate.
ReplyOk, I know he is a PR American; but just to clarify: I meant that he's probababy better off staying in Mexico (after being deported); but read the original post; there is a lot in there. My intent in the post was to show the absurdity and hypocracy of the whole opposition to the AZ law, when the the FEDS are the worst offenders; like with this accused car thief. The AZ law is modeled after the Federal one (except that AZ needs probable cause, and the FEDS do not). The FEDS can detain anyone, or determine citizenship status without most of the restrictions that AZ has. If you want to be critical of profiling; then why not with the FEDS? If we do not enforce laws simply because of potential mistakes, then you could enforce no laws at all! The Az law requires that criminal suspects not be racially profiled (unlike Mexico's laws which potentially enforces deportatation if demagraphic constitutency is impacted, and includes 2 to 10 year prison sentences). Get real and wake up folks; I'm not trying to be mean; but put your patriotism before the blindness of skin color. Justice is blind, and most people in the US (65%-70%) support the AZ law. What, are we all racists? Is that how you are defining it? If you do not like the AZ law then go to Mexico and get caught! Are you not aware that terrorists have, and are also able to come across the border? Did 9/11 teach you nothing? Do not be foolish!
ReplyThats it, you get the last word; the post is too old!
ReplyHow about this...if you are not hear legally, whether you are from Mexico, France, Canada, England, Pakistan or Africa...get the hell out. There is NO reason we should be paying for your health care or food stamps when there are plenty of US citizens of Mexican, French, Canadian, English, Pakistani or African decent that need the help. Enough is enough.
