Robert Rodriguez, Jessica Alba and Danny Trejo appeared on Univision this morning to push Machete on Despierta America. It seemed awkward. Not just because none of them could speak Spanish and had to use a translator, but because the Univision staff seemed so exicted to have them there and the Machete folks seemed like, uhhh...

Also weird was this exercise segment which focused on how to get Jessica Alba's "cuerpaso."

There's no doubt RoRo's folks see Latino marketing as crucial for the film's success, which is why they went the extra mile. Good for them, but we think they really could have won the audience over if they would have tried to do the interview in broken Spanish. It's a double standard American Latinos are held to, but people respect you for trying.

I always judge Latinos who don't speak Spanish. Extra points if you don't speak any Spanish at all but still manage to speak English with a noticeable Spanish accent--that's just f*cking weird. I'm not originally from the USA, and I do understand that in the Southwest and the West Coast you do have large populations of Mexican descended people who don't speak any Spanish going back some generations, but really? Can't they make an effort to speak some kind of rudimentary conversational Spanish? Jessica Alba's non-Spanish speaking ways I can understand, and maybe Robert Rodriguez, but Danny Trejo? WTF? He's from LA, he was in prison, this does not compute for me in the least.

Yeah, I have to admit that I nearly blinked an eye when I read that Danny Trejo doesn't speak Spanish. Perhaps I have just been reading too much of that fake Danny Trejo Twitter account. Also, I agree with the sentiment regarding those who speak only English yet with a noticeable Spanish accent. It is weird.

Not speaking español doesn't and shouldn't make you any less Latino but to be honest this was completely awkward, weird and not cool. I agree above they should have been prepared to speak Spanish on Despierta America. How do you go on that show and not speak español!? Tisk tisk. It was hilarious though :-\

I've heard Trejo speak Spanish on a couple of episodes of Breaking Bad....unless he rehearsed the lines very well because it sure sounded like he spoke Spanish.

I'm sure Trejo and RoRo speak broken Spanish, but they probably were afraid to look dumb, so they played it safe. RoRo did attempt to say a few words in Spanish, I heard him, but his voice was blocked out by the translator. It would have also been less awkward if the interviewers could speak with them in English–they all know it. But Univision has its strict rules.

This interview was cringe-worthy as well as not very interesting, but it's time to cut non-Spanish speaking Latinos some slack. I see how people like J. Alba, Rodriguez and Trejo are deterred from wanting to connect with their Latin roots/attempt to speak Spanish because their attempts are often received negatively from people like some of the commenters above. I'm Mexican-American and grew up not speaking Spanish and when I did make attempts in high school and university I often got made fun of by other Latinos. (I later lived in South America where I learned castellano and where the Latinos didn't judge.) If they had attempted to speak Spanish in this interview I'm sure there would have been a ton of comments tearing them apart.
