Scientists from the University of Southern California are studying a remote village in the Loja province of southern Ecuador inhabited entirely by dwarfs because they almost never get cancer or diabetes. The scientists, who began the study in 1988, say the subjects' mutated growth genes may prevent them from getting the diseases. Recently, the researchers published an article in a journal in Science Translational Medicine suggesting that blocking growth hormone in full-grown adults, through prescription drugs or a special diet, could unlock the mystery of cancer. But, even though the residents of the village don't get cancer often, their lifespan is not any longer than the rest of us.
