Juan Manuel Marquez, an inmate in the Cereso 1 jail of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, was caught raffling off 3 jail cells. One, which he referred to as the "luxurious suite," housed furniture, wooden cabinets, a fridge, TV, a DVD player and even air conditioning.

Yes, this guy's prison cell is bigger and better equipped than our expensive-ass, shoebox-sized NYC apartment.

Juan Manuel is currently serving a 45-year, 9-month sentence for two murders. His raffle manged to raise 40,000 pesos ($3,000) which didn't included the other two cells (more Super 8 Motel than the W, we assume, but still balling!). Last Tuesday Juan was sent to a punishment area and his luxury cell was destroyed, said Ricardo Ornelas, head of the state penitentiary system in Sonora.

So how does an inmate get to own all this fancy-by-jail-standards shit? According to Ornerlas, whose predecessor was murdered only 3 days into his tenure, the state's prison system incredibly corrupt and "money-driven." Apparently all of the guards at the 15 prisons her oversees have grown used to accepting bribes.

What? Mexican officials taking mordidas? UNHEARD OF!

And supposedly this is just the tip of the iceberg: Ornelas says there's illegal barber shops, grocery stores, markets, pawnshops and — this one is great — SHELLFISH bars (!). A total of 76 homes have been demolished and "there are still a lot more," says Ornelas.

So WTF is being done about this rampant corruption? Over 100 corrupt prison guards have been fired and, thanks to the backing of a new state law, Ornenas has been able to take away inmates' cellphones, the key device that's used to traffic goods. Also, the same law bars prison employees from taking cell phones inside the institution.

Tiny steps, people. Pasito a pasito.
