Over the weekend Pedro Cavadas, a Spanish surgeon known for carrying out complicated interventions such as freaky facial transplants, completed the world's first double leg transplant. We know, we know; this is like something out of that Human Centipede movie which sounds gross and painful. Still, it's pretty damn amazing!
The person who got this new set of legs could not use prosthetic ones because his amputation was too "high up," said Dr. Cavadas. That meant that this experimental transplant is the only chance the patient has of avoiding being stuck to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
Still, the man didn't get his set of legs right away; dude had to wait for over a year in order to land a donor. The surgical procedure lasted all night and, from what Dr. Cavadas can immediately tell, it was a success. But because neurons grow at about one millimeter per day, it can take months — maybe even years — for the transplant to be fully nerved.
Damn. How strange would it be to suddenly wake up with somebody else's legs? Very. This is a little much for us right now (we just trimmed our nails way too short) so... aqui la dejamos.
