Did you know Pitbull comes from a broken home? And not just any broken home, but a really, really broken home. As in, Alysha Acosta, his mother, is a recovering alcoholic and sexual abuse victim with a wicked background that makes Amy Winehouse look like Sandra Bullock (or any other boring person).

Alysha's story, like those of most recovering addicts, is very convoluted. I just re-watch her appearance of last night's Pa Lante Con Cristina and I'm still not entirely sure what it is I just heard. But I'm not alone; Pitbull and Alysha's other two daughters don't seem to know squat either. Just to give you an idea, a huge chunk of the show is focused on figuring out why Jennifer, one of the sisters, never met her mother until she was 18 while Michelle, the other sister, grew up without a dad.

I like Alysha. She reminds me of the girls I used to ditch high school with:

"It was 1974, the hippie era. It was full of LDS, PCP, marihuana, and when you're on drugs or drunk, you lose all your morals, your conscience -- everything."

Quite obviously, Alysha used to have a lot of issues. That's why it's not surprising to learn that her children grew up resenting her. But you'll be happy to know that Alysha is doing much better now; at some point homegirl put herself through community college where she earned a degree in psychology. Also, her relationship with her children -- at least with Pitbull -- seems to be better than it's ever been.
