King Juan Carlos De Esthpañia Is Sorry For Blowing $65K On Cool Safari Adventure

One night, while hanging out in his fancy castle, Juan Carlos Alfonso Victor Maria de Borbon y Borbon-Dos Sicilias, AKA "the King of Spain," turned to queen Sofia and said "You know what I don't get, Sofi? The internet. Like, what que diablos is a 'meme'? And what's so fun about staring at a screen for hours?" Frustrated, Juan walked over to his bookshelf and picked out some Hemingway. Then he snapped: "Joder, tia, you know what we should do? Go on a safari! Yeah, let's go hunt us an elephant! Because, unlike watching a cat fake-play a keyboard, killing things is real fun." And that's precisely what happened. 

Juan Carlos and Sofia spent an estimated $65K on their safari trip to Botswana. Currently Spain has a 23% unemployment rate and now many Esthañoles -- opposing political parties included -- are livid for two main reasons: 1) Juan blew lots of skrilla some ostentatious safari trip knowing Spain's economy isn't doing well and 2) The King is an honorary president of the Spanish branch of WWF, the animal conservation group, so why is he taking pictures of himself standing next to a dead elephant?

Juan realized his mistake and made a short apology: 

"I'm very sorry, I made a mistake. It won't happen again." 

Univision News points out that the king didn't actually spend public funds on the trip. But, just like my grandma used to say, "Dime con quien andas y te dire quien eres":

"The King didn’t spend public money on his trip. He was invited by a Saudi businessman, fueling longstanding suspicions about his relationships with some sheiks. All these events are have cast serious doubts on the credibility of the monarchy itself."

Personally I don't understand why certain countries still have monarchies -- a concept that peddles classism, I think -- and none of the Brits, Danes, or Spaniards I've interrogated have been able to produce a convincing counterargument. Needless to say, europeans LOVE their royals -- shit, even America went crazy with the whole Kate Middleton and Prince William wedding thing --and thus Juan Carlos is "generally popular" with the conquistadores. But what have the Spanish royals done their people lately? Embarrass them, that's what:

The royal family has recently been beset by a series of embarrassing news stories. [The king's] son-in-law, Inaki Urdangarin, has been questioned about a corruption scandal that involves claims that he used public funds to organise sports events. He has been suspended from taking part in royal engagements. Only last week, the king's grandson, 13-year-old Felipe Juan Froilan, was himself taken to hospital after an incident involving a gun. He shot himself in the foot during target practice outside the family home.

Hey -- royalty are people too! They make mistakes just like anybody else. Except, of course, their fuck ups are royally expensive. Like $65K-dead-elephant-crime-against-nature expensive.

UPDATE: The picture above was taken back in 2006. Still, the WWF wants nothing to do with Juan anymore.
