Cepillin Didn't Know Teenage Girls Were Sexual Abuse Victims When He Asked Them To Pole Dance

¡Escandalo! Somebody is trying to tarnish Cepillin's name! And that somebody is Sofia Almazan, director of Casa Alianza, a children's shelter in Mexico City. According to a press release sent out by Sofia earlier this week, Latin America's most beloved clown was kicked out of the shelter after he asked a group of teenage girls -- sexual abuse victims, specifically -- to pole dance to Gloria Trevi.  

That sounds pretty bad, but Cepillin says it was all a huge misunderstanding:

"I was invited by a newspaper, not by the foundation. I was given very vague details about the event and the shelter. Still, I showed up in good faith to give out toys -- toys that were donated by others in exchange for free admission to my circus show -- and also 100 balls I bought with my own money. But the kids that were there weren't kids at all, they were girls in their late teens. I wanted to entertain them but an 18-year-old girl doesn't care for children's toys, you know?"

So instead of asking the teenage girls from broken homes to play with teddy bears, Cepillin innocently suggested a Gloria Trevi singalong which, you know, has to include some pole dancing (the singalong wouldn't be complete without it). It was during the Trevi number that Casa Alianza staff members asked Cepillin to get-the-fuck-out because asking sexual abuse victims to imitate a sexual abuse enabler is, quite obviously, highly inappropriate. 

Cepillin says he wasn't trying to get frisky with the teens and I believe him. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt because he's been in the biz for 40 years and has never been involved in any scandal whatsoever. Is asking teenage girls to imitate somebody like Gloria Trevi is an terrible idea? Totally. But cool clowns are human, too. If anything, the whole experience is going to provide great conversation fodder for those teenage girls: "So Cepillin and I were pole dancing to Gloria Trevi and then..."

    I don't think he deserves the benefit of the doubt. There have been plenty of agents and others in the "biz" who have abused/abuse children yet nobody ever hears of it! I don't think he is any better and just because his career is based on being a clown doesn't make him innocent. He actually sounds like those pedophiles on dateline claiming that they are the real victims! Disgusting! Also that comment "If anything, the whole experience is going to provide great conversation fodder for those teenage girls" is demeaning to those young women and their experiences. Perfect example of the misogyny in Latina-American culture......

      You don't really explain why he DOESN'T deserve the benefit of the doubt. Have you personally ever heard anybody accuse Cepillin of molesting another group of children? Because if you haven't, you're practically assuming he's guilty because of those other "agents" in the "biz" you're basing your argument on, ones that have nothing to do with this case. Look, anybody is susceptible to f*cking up, anybody can commit an honest mistake -- even if said mistake is so obviously wrong -- so, since I've never heard of Cepi molesting anybody else, I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Calling my dumb comment misogynist, considering you don't actually know if the girls were victimized, is presumptuous and pure PC hyperbole. If it turns out that Cepillin IS a child molester and he did what he did with perverse, sexual undertones, then you'll be 100% right. Otherwise please reel it in.

I was given very vague details about the event and the shelter." show that he did not have enough information about the event. This is rather suspicious if you ask me. What kind of artist/performer doesn't have his/her agents hash out the details of the gig. Now that is very sketch. Also an artist knows s/he is the performer. So tell me why did he want these young women to preform for him? While some celebrities are given performances they are often preplanned and age appropriate. Gloria Trevi for abuse victims is not appropriate now or ever. You also have to take into account he is a 40 something man asking teenagers to dance for him. Weird. Also your "dumb" comment does qualify as misogynistic you are a man commenting on how these women probably aren’t abused (making them liars) and Cepillin should therefore be given the “benefit of the doubt”. Let’s analyze the issue at hand. First we must acknowledge that most Latin-American countries are patriarchal which gives men power and makes women “extras” in life (not all wo/men participate in this but generally it's the truth.). Then we must see that not only is Cepillin a man but he is also a celebrity. So he has double the power. Thus, it would be a very scary and intimidating thing for women who have been abused to be faced with a man of power demanding things from them because it would mimic the power/powerless roles of men/women in abusive relationships. Also, the same comment questions the women's credibility of being abused and therefore implies they are liars. Normally I can handle the tongue-in-cheek comments of the blog but I don't think questioning a person's abuse is funny. Think of the obstacles these women had to face and are facing by saying they have been victimized. In questioning these victims past you are also questioning the shelter's validity. Do you honestly think the shelter lets in just anyone into their programs? No, they are aware of the vicitims’ problems and are working with them to overcome them. So, for you to disparage their plight of abuse victims takes dignity away from them. Nobody asks to be abused and it is not something one will look back on fondly.
