A special screening of Girl In Progress was held yesterday at the Directors Guild of America in LA, and the entire cast was there to give face. Eva Mendes is, of course, the film's selling point but she's supported by old-school funny man Eugenio Derbez and newcomer Cierra Ramirez, her daughter in the film.
I didn't really know anything about Girl In Progress (in theaters May 11) until about 5 minutres ago, when I watched the trailer:
My two cents: The only "coming of age" movie I've ever liked is Welcome To The Dollhouse, but Girl In Progress, maybe because of its somewhat realistic depiction of teenage attitudes (for a PG-13 flick), is looking like it might be OK. I'm not 100% sold on Eva Mendes playing the Latina mom housekeeper because she's too hot, her English too... perfectly enunciated. Wasn't chola-tranny Kate Del Castillo available? Of course most Latina housekeepers don't look like that either, but wouldn't that character make for a better movie? I think so.
Anyway. This movie will be out on mother's day weekend so... mijas, take your mom to Mervyn's then to this.

I still remember taking this movie from the San Diego audio video shop. Any attempt to provide insight into various real-life issues, such as teenage rebellion or the perils of single motherhood, is compromised by the film's predicable reliance on feel-good sentimentality.
ReplyThis movie is interesting enough to make you lose a couple of hours without realizing it. I've seen it on Tucson direct TV a year ago and I was really captivated by it. I even called my mom to watch it with me, so we can laugh together.
