Star Gum, I've never tried your products, but I love you. I love you because thanks to your contest and its hilarious concept, the term chavoruco has now entered my lexicon.

WTF does chavoruco mean? I'm no etymologist, but I don't have to be one to figure it out: Chavo is Mexican slang for dude, kid, youth, or adolescent, but you probably know that because of Chavo Del Ocho. (Note: In places like Puerto Rico chavo is a colloquial word for money.) And ruco simply means old, though cholos in America sometimes used the female version, ruca, instead of girl or girlfriend. You put the two together -- chavo + ruco -- and *poof* chavoruco is born! I know; my amateur analysis of the term still doesn't fully explain what it means. But you probably figured it out: chavoruco = the dreaded man child. Or middle-aged bachelor, same difference. And this guy, the star and winner of the Star Gum commercial contest, fucking nails it:

There's a similar but older term in Mexican jargon: el forever, a word that was mostly reserved for burnouts though it also befitted le man childs. But now, thanks to chavoruco, we longer have to repurpose forever.
