Besides being Cuban, what do Niurka, Yanixan, and Ojani have in common? Their names are very uncommon -- well, at least outside of Cuba. It is no coincidence; strange names, says this British reporter, became trendy after the revolution:

"In 1959, immediately after the revolution, there was a noticeable increase in names like Fidel, Raul, and Ernesto. But it wasn't until the '70s that Cubans' imagination soared. That's when the letter 'Y,' which rarely appears in Spanish names, became a favorite of many fathers and mothers, creating names like Yulieski, Yumilis, and Yaraleidis, among others."

Other popular -- and odd -- names that are currently circulating in Cuba: Usnavy (Yup, because of the US Navy), Noslenis ("Nelson" backwards with an added I and S), Yaniel (Daniel with a Y), Odlanier ("Reinaldo" backwards), and Dayesi (a combination of "Yes" in both Russian and English).

Cubans, I applaud your strange naming schemes. I'm tired of all them Juans, Marias, Joses, and Lupes.
