MTV Tr3s boldly asked a gaggle of outspoken Latinos to weigh in with their thoughts, and it seems that folks are fairly split down the middle:

There exist, of course, various speculations into why one or another sex is more prone to cheat.

• There’s science: “Men have many, many sperm and women have but a precious few eggs, so men have more of a biological imperative to spread their seed to as many lonely eggs as they can! Plus? Men don’t get pregnant, so they can worry less about the consequences of having multiple sex partners.” 
• There’s social conditioning: “Men are rewarded for being pigs, whereas women are viewed as the gatekeepers of morality, their roles being to keep men in check.” / “Chicks are sluts, bro.” 
• There’s culture: “Hello, machismo? Men are encouraged to, if not cheat, then make sure women know they are sexually potent and viable. Women are then relegated to one role on the slut / whore dichotomy.” 
• And there’s confusion: “So wait? Are we succumbing to a heteronormative gender binary? Is there one way to be a man or a woman, masculine or feminine? Where do gay people, genderqueers and trans people fit into this argument?”

What’s your take?

(For the record, the answer to whom is most likely to cheat is “a bonobo” - of any gender. They walk the ho stroll on the regular. Interestingly, their DNA is as high as 98% identical to our own.)

Pedro Rivera, the man responsible for singer Jenni Rivera, is in a bit of trouble now that his alleged lover, Erika Suarez, is accusing his wife, Rosa, of harassing her. Seems like she’s fitting right in.

Suarez, who has a six-year-old son by Mr. Rivera, says Mrs. Rivera set her home on fire in 2006 and vandalized her car. A request by Suarez to have a restraining order issues against Rivera was denied, but what are restraining orders when compared to public allegations of hysterical behavior and arson?

La Tijera reported Erika Suarez’s day in court, which Rosa Rivera also attended. What is interesting is how the issue seems to be painted as a feud between the two women (at one point, Rivera tells reporters that she will emerge victorious in court because she is “la señora,” the wife), and not between either woman and Pedro Rivera himself. According to Mrs. Rivera, she and Pedro were committed to making their marriage work despite his adulterous affair, and Suarez - again, the mother of one of Rivera’s children - kept pursuing him.

It remains unclear whether Jenni herself will retaliate by sending her brother to do her dirty work for her. Aw. Family.

Ingredients

• 1/2 cup white rice (long grain)
• 2 cups water
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 3 cinnamon sticks
• 1 10-ounce can evaporated milk
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• ground cinnamon for garnish

Preparation

1. In a saucepan over medium heat, cook the rice, water, salt, and cinnamon sticks for 15 minutes.2. Add the evaporated milk and sugar when the rice grains begin to split open.   

3. Reduce the heat to low and cook the rice mixture until creamy. Remove the mixture from the heat. Take out the cinnamon sticks and reserve for garnishing. Mix in the vanilla extract.

4. Place the rice mixture into individual serving cups and chill for about 1 1/2 hours.

5. Garnish with powdered cinnamon and cinnamon sticks before serving.

The accidental deportation of Salvadoran immigrant José C. Rodríguez-Portillo some two months ago has opened up a can of worms for those who did not formerly realize that ICE is made up of a gang of marauding thugs with the reasoning abilities of a drug-addled lab monkey. 

In a rare move, U.S. immigration has agreed to revisit Rodriguez-Portillo’s case, reuniting him with his family in Miami in the meantime. His attorney, Eduardo Soto, is also representing two Venezuelan brothers, Guillermo and Jesús Reyes, who are students at Miami-Dade College and also facing possible deportation. Soto maintains that immigration officials overlooked the fact that his client is among thousands of Salvadorans granted legal, temporary residence in the United States following the 2001 earthquakes that devastated much of their country. 

Such mistakes are symptomatic of an overall attitude long-exhibited by ICE officials, who have received countless complaints regarding their tactics which, according to immigrants’ rights groups and their victims, often smack of racial profiling and xenophobia. So far, the Obama administration has reacted to this by going ahead and expanding ICE’s power, authorizing local police to carry out federal immigration laws. And while ICE proudly points to a growth in the number of people they have deported, the question is whether they are deporting and targeting actual undocumented criminals in the first place.

According to a survey by the U.S. Tennis Association, 32% more Latinos and 19% more non-Latino blacks are playing the sport, with tennis drawing in an additional 25% devotees overall since 2003.

Of course, it holds that an increase in players overall would equate in a rise in so-called minority players, but tennis, along with sports like polo or golf, has long been seem as the idle pastime of the wealthy, and the wealthy have long been seen as more or less monochromatic, despite the simultaneous realities that, yes, Latinos and/or black families can and do live in upper middle-class suburbs wherein weekend warrior mom and dads shuttle their children to practice and, yes, inner-city kids of all ethnicities do not cut off their interests at running either through busted sprinklers or a George Lopez joke.

Still, the stereotype of who, exactly, plays tennis remains more or less steadfast. In an article from earlier this month, coaches in relatively non-Latino pockets or relatively Latino-heavy South Florida professed the desire to actively recruit Latino tennis coaches in an effort to appeal to more diverse players.

Said Gustavo Granitto, head of GTC Tennis Consultancy and a former International Tennis Federation development officer in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean:

I want Hispanic coaches to be able to increase the attraction of this sport to Latinos. They are very passionate about tennis, and can share this passion with their students. It is necessary to do more - by far - with player development among Latinos.

See, it is our passion, and perhaps our increase in expendable income or access to after-school programs, that fuels us. It is because of this that we can saunter across sun-baked courts, our chest hair, regardless of gender, glistening in the late-afternoon sun, as we cry “Set. Match. Amor.”

Martinez says he was invited up to Lopez’s room, where Lopez asked him to engage in anal sex. The suggestion, maintains Martinez, was enough to enrage him to the point of murdering Lopez, adding that the young man attempted to attack him. This is when, Martinez adds, he not only took up a kitchen knife and murdered the 19-year-old, but also cut off his head and limbs. Other reports say Martinez killed Lopez only after realizing, during sex, that his partner was biologically male and that Martinez also burned his victim.

Lopez’s remains were eventually found by the side of the road near his hometown of Caguas, Puerto Rico.

If all this sounds a little too familiar, it’s because you read about a strikingly similar case right here on Guanabee. The “gay panic” defense - as well as the excuse that a mixture of righteous homophobic rage and self-defense resulted in murder and dismemberment - was used by Jacobo Piñeiro Rial, a Spanish man accused of slaughtering a gay couple after being invited up to their apartment. After a jury of his peers decided that “gay-panic” was a legitimate excuse for maiming, torturing, murdering, dismembering and setting a couple and their apartment on fire, Galicia’s Superior Justice Tribunal has decided to revisit the case and what they have labeled its “absurd, illogical” ruling.

The way the case is being handled has drawn the attention and ire of GLBT groups after an investigating police officer insinuated that the victim deserved to die for the “lifestyle he was living.” These groups also point out that Puerto Rico has never classified the murder of a gay man as a hate crime, hinting that these case could set a precedent in murders due to homo- and transphobia.

If you’ve ever asked a Mexican whether it’s cold enough for a chaqueta or asked a Cuban to pass a bollo at dinner, you’ll know that Latino slang terms can vary from country to country, region to region, generation to generation - a reality that often results in embarrassing situations.

Ellis, witnesses allege, cut in line at the cashier, placing her items on the conveyor belt in front of people who had been waiting their turn. Witnesses maintain Ellis grew combative after being confronted, to the point that authorities needed to be called in.

According to police reports, Ellis became violent while refusing arrest for disturbing the peace, kicking one officer in the shin and splitting another’s lip. She also cursed repeatedly, even threatening one officer that she was going to “beat his ass.”

Ellis, meanwhile, says she skipped the line to join her cousin, whose own checkout line was moving faster. She says the woman standing behind her cousin, and now her, in line, had placed her purchases on the conveyor belt and that the woman pushed Ellis when she began putting her own things on the belt. She then claims the store’s white customers and employees called her racial slurs, eventually leading her to file a complaint with the NAACP.  

The Walmart store manager, Lorenzo Lopez, downplayed any role the Wal*Mart employees may have had in the incidence by saying they reported the “disturbance” according to protocol, and that everything else was left up to police.

Certain reports on her case describe her as a “preacher’s daughter” who had never before been in trouble with the law. But don’t “good people” get in “bad situations” all the time? Can’t someone get angry enough to the point that they lash out of character? And, even if this was in character for Ms. Ellis, even if she is short-tempered or argumentative or what-have-you, is this reason to negate her allegations of racism? This isn’t a rhetorical question: How much does a person’s attitude have bearing on how believable or sympathetic they are  in cases such as these? What role does the “anger” ascribed by society to black women and Latinas of any race play in the way others view their (our) struggles and complaints? And at one point is any anger a weapon against ourselves as opposed to a tool in helping us achieve what we want?
