It was February, 1959, one month after a 32 year-old Fidel Castro won control of Cuba in the revolution. A time before track suits, when dictators wore pajamas on international television and broadcast news giants conducted interviews while casually smoking. Edward R. Murrow sat Castro down on a surreal living room set for his show Person To Person to ask him about his future plans for the Republic.

Gender testing for female athletes, like that going on now for Caster Semenya, is nothing new: it’s been around since the 60’s! And in 1985 it ensnared Spanish hurdler Maria Jose Martinez-Patino, who was stripped of her medals when it turned out she wasn’t genetically female.

Like the man for whom it was organized, the dedication ceremony honoring the work of civil rights attorney Gustavo “Gus” Garcia (pictured, left), went mostly unnoticed by the media, but minorities everywhere owe a debt of gratitude to the first-ever Hispanic lawyer to argue before the Supreme Court.
